I had a huge fear of public speaking until I learned the three basics for any topic. If you you use the format of Past, Present and Future for any impromptu speech, it really takes the anxiety out of your preparation.

Thanks for the initiative, Perry. I think you've hit the #1 tool for speaking - prepare! Some are confident enough to "wing it" but rarely do you get by with that. It should only be a fallback position. Writing it out, reading it out loud alone, reading it out loud to someone who loves you (and is willing, not coerced, to listen), timing the length of it to make sure it is at or below the time limit. Adlibs get me into trouble and often make me go over time. I need to know my material well enough to make eye contact. Frequently. Enough for now. I have to prepare for a public reading tonight. :-)

Hey Anonymous,
You may have been to one of my presentations in the past. That is the formula I teach to all my students. (In the past I have taught with SkillPath Seminars). If it was from my class - glad to har you are using it. If not glad to hear you are using it anyway. It is a tried and true formula.

Hey Joyce,
Always great to hear from you. Thanks for the support. How did your reading go last night? Tells us about it and if you have a web address for the next event please add it to your post.

Went well. I followed my own advice and prepared. Next event will be an open mic during a Writers' workshop April 17/18: http://wordshop09.blogspot.com
